5G
Mobile networks are set to dramatically increase their data speeds with the launch of 5G wireless technology now adopted by the major networks in the UK. The launch is well under way already, however It’s a staged roll-out, with the majority of the UK expected to have 5G by 2022.
What is 5G?
In simple terms, 5G means ‘fifth generation’ of the technology used to deliver the mobile internet, which allows you to access the internet with a compatible mobile or dongle without needing to connect a cable or connect to a Wi-Fi network.
5G has the capability to be up to 10 times faster than 4G – with real-world examples of achieving over 400 megabits per second (Mbps), which is considerably faster than the average wired fibre broadband speed of 30Mbps!
To benefit from 5G, you will need to have a 5G compatible phone, and be on a 5G contract with a network that offers the service in your area.
The following table illustrates which networks have the most 5G availability throughout the UK:
Network | 5G availability in towns and cities |
Vodafone | 124 |
O2 | 150 |
EE | 160 |
Three | 303 |
Right now, there are a relatively small number of phones that support 5G, but the list is growing all the time, and includes models from all the big manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung and Huawei.
