The analogue line and ISDN switch off

What is happening?
BT are upgrading their exchanges to fully digital which will mean the switching off of all analogue lines (PSTN) and ISDN2/ISDN30e lines by December 2025. BT have already given the “two year” stop/sell announcement to a number of areas including Salisbury and Mildenhall.
What is the stop/sell notice?
The stop/sell notice means that Companies in those areas cannot order new or additional analogue lines or ISDN and within two year they must have upgraded their site to fibre lines and broadband.
When will my area be given notice?
To check when your area will be given the stop/sell announcement please email stopsell@ollesso.co.uk.
Who will be affected?
All businesses and homes will be affected and it is not just your telephony lines, it will also affect everything that uses the analogue line like alarms, EPOS machines, door entry systems, CCTV and fax machines.
Why does this need to happen?
The analogue, PSTN infrastructure has been around for many decades and it has limitations in its ability to support the new technology around smartphones, video, apps and the internet.
Also many spare parts needed to maintain the PSTN/analogue infrastructure are becoming more and more scarce.
What are the benefits to me?
By upgrading to fibre and digital broadband you are future proofing your business and also reducing costs, increasing flexibility for remote working and building greater resilience to your Company’s technology estate.
What are the new services available?
The new services are based around SIP, VOIP, SoGEA and FTTP! Please excuse us if we get a bit technical but please see below an explanation of these services:
SIP = Session Initiation Protocol – used for voice over internet telephone and video calls – often local, national and mobile calls will be free of charge as part of your SIP trunk rental.
SoGEA = Single order Generic Ethernet Access – offers similar connectivity to fibre to the cabinet broadband (FTTC) but does not need an analogue line. It can offers speeds of upto 80 Mbps.
FTTP = Fibre to the Premises – this service offers ultrafast broadband with speeds of up to 1GB download and 220MB upload. This will be a cost effective solution against a leased line.
